  • Regular maintenance is the key.

Your generator unit needs to have a regular inspection just like you need to have a regular medical check-up. Replace the air filter on time to ensure that the air going into the engine is clean enough for a complete combustion process. Make sure that the oil filter gets replaced regularly as well to prevent impurities from entering into the engine and disturbing its operation. Do not forget to give a regular inspection on the fuel injector and the fuel pump to ensure that the amount of fuel needed gets precisely injected and none of it gets wasted.

  • Apply a reasonable amount of working load on your unit.

The fuel efficiency will be different under different working loads for the same unit. In general, it is the most fuel efficient to have the unit operating under 70%~80% of its rated power. If the applied load is too low compared to its rated power, there will be some fuel wasted under this situation. It’s like having a pickup truck transporting a handbag. The fuel consumed is about the same when transporting several pieces of furniture. Hence, it is important in terms of fuel efficiency to have the rated power of the unit proportionally matching the working load applied onto it.

  • Make sure the quality of the fuel is reasonably good.

There can be a lot of impurities in diesel fuel if the quality is not guaranteed. These impurities will clog up the fuel injector and impact the injection process. This will definitely make the unit less fuel efficient.

  • Maintain a proper operating temperature.

Oil can become thinner if the engine's temperature is too high, which will cause a decrease in its lubrication effect and result in more tear and wear of the engine. Therefore, it is important to always have the cooling system of the generator set working properly.

  • Optimize the operating procedures

Make sure to follow the correct operating protocols when starting up or shutting down the unit. Try to avoid starting up or shutting down the unit too often because the unit will consume more fuel in order to get to a normal operating state from the startup state. Also try to keep the rotational speed as stable as possible during its operation. This will also help improve the fuel efficiency of the unit.

The improvement of fuel efficiency can be worked on through multiple lenses. Procedures listed above — regular inspection and maintenance, reasonable applied working load, choosing fuel with rather good quality, and following the right operating protocols — will not only help with lowering the fuel consumption of the operating unit, but also keep your generator set healthy and reliable for a longer period of time.
